Transgressing the context

Each biennial discusses his time. And as for the future is a partial reflection of events.

This first millennium Biennale takes the pulse of Spanish architecture on a specified date . Here ends the century of modern architecture. A passionate and exciting century whose impact continues to set our current steps. I have no doubt that the era we live forgetful thrives on discovering and revealing as new – in fact it always is – the modern look of the last century .

With the avant- born twentieth century to encourage between 1915 and 1935 the heroic period of modern architecture . The second half of the reviewed, questioned and even sentenced to modernity. In recent years , this being so intense and complex transformation of the modern, that no one entertains in naming the situation, just keep recapitulating and recycling , with digesting as sumptuous banquet . Our goals determine our culture, the value of our civilization. The ambiguous end of our time, laden with pragmatism , ambition material and media image , but also full of emotion in risk to unravel the mysteries of man , the scope of the media created , the driving force of technology.

The power of ideas today , also in architecture, is based on critical knowledge of the deeper ambitions of contemporary society .

The jury of the Sixth Biennial of Spanish Architecture , wanted to highlight the projects that celebrate and confirms the confidence in the transformative power of architecture. Today we know that the media added impetus , the force is potentially more radical and powerful than ever.

The Kursaal Rafael Moneo , Manuel de la Dehesa Prize reinvents the nineteenth-century serenity of the bay of San Sebastian to revive the city, transcend the territory and incorporate it into a present of rapid change .

The Kursaal in San Sebastián in the landscape extends from the mouth of the bay and the sea , and yet their light prisms face its precise tectonic urban order .

Toledo ladders are a geographical feature , a failure in the field, a cut on the mountain while wrapped in origami twists mechanical and functional appliance.

Today as then, for contemporary man as passionate spectator , it is a great joy to settle in the heart of the crowd , in the ebb and flow of movement , in the midst of the fugitive and the infinite.

The force of ideas in architecture is also in possession of communication. The more role media play in the most necessary rotunda architecture and seductive image is made . The masses are part of the picture of the building and its acceptance or rejection is the added strength of a collective imagination stimulated.

Powerful ideas transcend architecture travel light and discipline to become media message. Architects know . The Kursaal are two crystalline rocks such as headlamps in the bay of San Sebastian. These featured at the Sixth Biennial of Spanish Architecture projects also have the goodness to be a valuable contemporary presence on the international scene . Since its incorporation in anti-normative and late forties, Spanish architecture was based heavily on modern project. Probably the seemingly autistic independence of our teachers , there is of course until today , an open mind and therefore more confident and lasting achievements of modernity. Moreover, curiosity and craving for novelty of Spanish architectural culture in recent decades , has allowed a continuous flow of trends and influences in all directions. Publishing initiatives , invitations , contests , meetings and debates proliferate and open borders. In the IV Bienal the vast majority of the selected works are the reflection of an open and cosmopolitan of contemporary culture that produces understanding. The architecture and Spanish architects have increasingly international presence , and every day have more room in our environment the proposed foreign architects .

Each Biennial speaks of his time. The first Biennial millennium wields contemporary arguments for a possible change through the transgression of the context, the communicative strength of the image and respond to new demands for mass use . We identified 2001 the Spanish architecture expresses a renewed confidence in the power of ideas with strong social and cultural transformation. Maybe even the conviction that architecture can contribute to a more livable world . This is definitely authentic pending revolution .
